Last Thursday, city officials said the Power & Light District changed its dress code after a two-year dispute over alleged discrimination.
Gone are specific restrictions against excessively baggy clothing, undershirts, sweatshirts or athletic attire in the KC Live outdoor area of the Power & Light District. The only stated prohibitions include profanity on clothing, sleeveless shirts on men, sweatpants and full sweatsuits.
The more lenient dress code comes before a peak season that brings several major African-American conventions to downtown.
City Council members said they were relieved the controversy appears to have subsided, especially because Kansas City is scheduled to be host for the NAACP National Convention on July 10-15 and the National Baptist Convention USA, one of the nation’s largest African-American religious conventions, on Sept. 6-10.
"There were many of us who were extremely concerned that delegates to the NAACP National Convention might have a bad experience in the Power & Light District, due to the problems reported in the past," said Councilman John Sharp. "These corrective actions are long overdue, but better late than never."
