Biography    by Corey Apar

Chicago metalcore outfit Dead to Fall initially came together in 1999, undergoing various lineup changes throughout its existence. The band debuted to rave reviews in 2002 with Victory Records' Everything I Touch Falls to Pieces. Players on their first album consisted of Jonathan Hunt (vocals), Bryan Lear (guitar), Justin Jakimiak (bass), Sean Nichols (guitar), and Dan Craig (drums), and the band set the stage early for their brutal blend of heavy metal, hardcore, and Swedish metal tendencies. Tours with the Red Chord, Darkest Hour, and Malevolent Creation followed before member changes ensued. For their sophomore effort, Hunt and ..

Police in Australia arrest man for listening to rap music

Posted by ChuckyG, March 5, 2010
Mr Wilkie was parked outside a Timboon supermarket, waiting for his mother, when he was arrested.

The Warrnambool Magistrates' Court heard he was listening to lyrics such as "shut your f------ mouth bitch, f------ motherf-----".

The court was told the arresting officers found the music offensive and derogatory to females.

Mr Wilkie allegedly told officers: "You're a joke, go do some real police work."

Crime must be at an all time low in Australia if they have time to waste on cases like this.

Censorship Quotes

Quotes of the Week

"Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself." - Potter Stewart (1915 - 1985)

"The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it." - John Gilmore (co-founder, Electronic Frontier Foundation)

"We are willing enough to praise freedom when she is safely tucked away in the past and cannot be a nuisance. In the present, amidst dangers whose outcome we cannot foresee, we get nervous about her, and admit censorship." - E. M. Forster (1879 - 1970)

Woke up this morning, started to sneeze

I had a cigarette and a cup of tea

I looked in the mirror what did i see

A nine stone weakling with knobbly knees

I did my knees bend press ups touch my toes

I had another sneeze and i blew my nose

I looked in the mirror at my pigeon chest

I had to put on my clothes because it made me depressed

Surely there must be a way

For me to change the shape i'm in

Dissatisfied is what i am

I want to be a better man

Superman superman wish i could fly like superman

Superman superman i want to be like superman

I want to be like superman

Superman superman wish i could fly like superman

Woke up this morning, what did i see

A big black cloud hanging over me

I switched on the radio and nearly dropped dead

The news was so bad that i fell out of bed

There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike

Got to be a superman to survive

Gas bills, rent bills, tax bills, phone bills

I'm such a wreck but i'm staying alive

[look in the paper, what do i see,

Robbery, violence, insanity.]

Hey girl we've got to get out of this place

There's got to be something better than this

I need you, but i hate to see you this way

If i were superman then we'd fly away

I'd really like to change the world

And save it from the mess it's in

I'm too weak, i'm so thin

I'd like to fly but i can't even swim

Superman superman i want to fly like superman

Superman superman wish i could fly like superman

Superman superman wish i could fly like superman

Superman superman i want to be like superman

Internet Censorship: Is it Inevitable? wxpnews

Internet Censorship: Is it Inevitable?

The Internet has been called the last frontier of free speech, where you can say what you think without fear of repercussions. Of course, we all know that's no longer completely true - if it ever was. Most of us are aware that some countries exert heavy-handed government control over the Internet access of their citizens. The Chinese communist party (PRC) blocks web sites that express political opinions critical of the party, and even monitors what individuals do on the Internet. Dissidents have been imprisoned for signing petitions or speaking out against the government. Even such web sites as CNN, NBC and BBC News have been blocked, along with the Chinese version of Wikipedia.

Chinese search engine results are filtered, as well. If you search on a key word that is on the censored list, you get no results. Search providers must abide by the regulations to operate in China. Some of the blocked words and phrases include the Chinese forms of: democracy, dictatorship, genocide, oppression and evil. References to certain groups, events and politicians are also blocked.

A recent hacking attack on Google and other companies that was reported to have originated in China brought the censorship issue into the news. The attacks occurred in December, and in early January, Google announced that they were going to stop censoring search results on Google.cn and might even pull out of China entirely if they couldn't operate an unfiltered search service within Chinese law. Even Secretary of State Hillary Clinton got involved.

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-China-Censorship
Vol. 10, #7 - Feb 15, 2010 - Issue #417

However, it's been a month since Google's initial announcement, and AP reports that the "Great Firewall of China" is still up and Google is still there, with their search results still being filtered. The company is apparently in negotiations with the Chinese government. Of course, all this is complicated further by the fact that China has the world's largest online population and its online advertising market is predicted to be up to $20 billion per year by 2014:

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Great-Firewall

Of course, China isn't the only country that censors the Internet; it's just the biggest. Iran uses what is called "one of the most extensive technical filtering systems in the world" to block web sites that run counter to the government's purposes - including not just the sites of political dissenters but also social networking sites such as Facebook and Flickr and many foreign blogs. Since all Internet traffic that comes into or out of Iran goes through one gateway, the Telecommunications Company of Iran, it's easy for them to monitor and block traffic, and the filtering got much more intense there after last summer's elections:

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Iran-Censorship

Although we might think of Internet censorship as something associated only with totalitarian regimes, that's not the case. Australian citizens are currently up in arms (well, figuratively) over the government's efforts to control Internet content there. The party in power reportedly is getting ready to introduce legislation to force ISPs in Australia to block web sites on a list compiled by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Google is part of this controversy, too, having said it would not "voluntarily" comply with the government's request.

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Australias-Censorship

Of course, in a democracy like Australia - or the U.S. - censorship is carefully presented as something that must be done to protect the citizenry, most often the children. Even though the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, even here some speech is deemed to be more free than other speech. Child pornography is the most glaring example of a case where the mere act of looking at pictures can get a person thrown in prison for a long, long time - even if no real children were used in the making of those pictures. In 2008, the Supreme Court upheld a 2003 law that makes it a federal offense to obtain or provide sexually explicit images of children, regardless of whether the images are computer-generated. In fact, just requesting or offering such images is illegal even if no images exist.

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Child-Pornography-Law

Now we all know that pedophiles do tremendous harm to children and who can argue with curbing their rights to free speech? But does it become a slippery slope when you start making one type of speech illegal? There's another law in the making that's also designed to protect children, called the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act. It would impose penalties of up to two years in prison for "coercing, intimidating, harassing or causing substantial emotion distress to a person" via electronic means (email, web boards, or other network technologies).

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Anti-Bullying

In most states, harassment is already a crime, but to rise to that level requires more than just "causing distress." After all, it doesn't take much for some people to become distressed. What if you get into a political discussion in an email group and post opinions (or even facts) that reflect negatively on a candidate or cause that another group member believes in? If what you say causes that person to feel emotionally distressed, will the feds should up at your door to carry you away? It may sound silly, but when it comes to the law, wording is very important and the wording of this one is very troubling.

I don't think anyone advocates completely free and unfettered speech on the Internet. Obviously the concept of free speech shouldn't be a defense for plagiarism or copyright infringement or libel. But those things traditionally have been considered matters for the civil courts, not the criminal justice system. If you post something I created (writing, a picture, a song) without my permission, I could sue you and get an injunction forcing you to take it down and/or get a monetary judgment against you. If you posted false statements about me that damaged my reputation, caused me to lose my job or broke up my marriage, likewise I could take you to court and get compensation for my pain and suffering.

The trend today is to make every possible undesirable behavior a crime. Because the Internet is a venue that brings together many different people from many different places, cultures, social classes and belief systems, there is the potential for a lot of undesirable behaviors. Are we to make them all criminal offenses? Aside from the obvious practical drawbacks (even greater overcrowding of jails and prisons and the high costs of processing so many criminal actions), there are sociological implications. If everything is a crime, then everyone becomes a de facto criminal. And if we turn a whole society of generally law abiding people into criminals, what does that do to respect for the law in general? And who will enforce all these new federal Internet crimes? And just how far away are we from being just like the totalitarian regimes whose censorship of thought and speech we abhor?

We may be closer than you think. Legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate last year that would give the White House unprecedented control over the Internet, with the power to declare a "cybersecurity emergency relating to "non-governmental computers networks" (yours and mine?) and "do what's necessary" to deal with the alleged threat.

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Control-of-Internet

That bill hasn't passed into law, but it's not dead, either. Just last week, the House passed its own cybersecurity bill, and it could be joined with the Senate bill (SB 773).

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Cybersecurity-Bill

It's something to think about. Tell us what you think about it. Is freedom of speech on the Internet (and indeed, everywhere else) long gone? Was it ever a viable concept, or just a utopian ideal that couldn't work in practice? Is it worth giving up freedom of speech to see that pedophiles and other criminals get punished? Are we creating a nation of weak children by outlawing the bullying behaviors that were once a normal part of growing up? Or is making those behaviors illegal a step in the right direction toward a more civilized society? What online behaviors should (or shouldn't) be crimes? We invite you to discuss these topics in our forum at

http://www.wxpnews.com/3CUUKK/100216-Forum-Discussion

What is insanity?

What is insanity? It is believing in lies.

It only took me 38 years to find the answer to this
question that has haunted me since childhood.

The Worst Mistake I Ever Made

After being on this planet since 1961 I finally
concluded that the worst mistake I ever made
is associating with the wrong people.

And the absolute worst association of all is living with the wrong person.

If you allow yourself to believe what wrong people tell
you then you have made the worst mistake of all. It will
completely destroy your life.

Run far and run fast.

Helen Reddy - Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady LYRICS

I guess it was yourself you were involved with
I would have sworn it was me
I might have found out sooner if
You'd only let me close enough to see

That ain't no way to treat a lady
No way to treat your baby
Your woman, your friend
That ain't no way to treat a lady, no way
But maybe it's a way for us to end

I was only bein' a picture
With all the colors I know
While you were busy looking into
Wide blue mirrors and lovin' the show

That ain't no way to treat a lady
No way to treat your baby
Your woman, your friend
That ain't no way to treat a lady, no way
But maybe it's a way for us to end

There's a funny kind of consolation
Keepin' me sane
And I'd really like to share it
Crawl on deep in my brain
You see the time you never felt me
Lovin' you or needin' you
So leavin' you now
You still won't know how to feel the pain

I was lookin' out for my happiness
While you were looking within
And before you know your own reflection
Always starts to tire you and it's happened again

That ain't no way to treat a lady
No way to treat your baby
Your woman, your friend
That ain't no way to treat a lady, no way
But maybe it's a way for us to end

That ain't no way to treat a lady
No way to treat your baby
Your woman, your friend
That ain't no way to treat a lady, no way
But maybe it's a way for us to end

The 7 Deadly Small Business Mistakes You Must Avoid

The 7 Deadly Small Business Mistakes You Must Avoid

The 7 Deadly Small Business Mistakes You Must Avoid

By Janis D. Pettit
Why do so many small or solo businesses fail? Is it because the owners weren't good enough at what they did? In most cases that's just not true. Most of them were very skilled and talented in their area of expertise.
So why do people continue to struggle without enough clients or income? It's heartbreaking to me when someone gives up who has great potential and a realistic dream. I want you to succeed in a big way. In fact I'm passionate about it.
So I want to share the 7 top deadly mistakes I've seen repeatedly that can pull you down and how to avoid them.
1. Believing that being good at what you do or even being an expert is all you need.
There are two completely separate "tracks" you need to master. First you need to be good at delivering a quality product or service. That's a given. Many people stop here. They act as if they are still an employee working for someone else. They spend their time trying to deliver services instead of building a business, which leads us to the second track--building a business.
Not only do you need to be good at what you do, you need to master the skills and mindset it takes to run a business, like strategic planning, marketing, sales, finance, productivity, priority-based action, management skills, self-discipline and self-motivation. This is the key. Master these skills and your success will soar.
The best way to do this is to learn from those who are where you want to be, so you can learn the strategies they used to succeed. Without the entrepreneurial skill and mindset, you cannot succeed.
2. Wasting money on poorly crafted or unnecessary marketing materials
Don't spend money building a website or crafting a business card, logo or brochure until you learn what makes them work to bring you clients. I've seen so many people waste money on an inefficient website with no traffic because they didn't know what questions to ask when hiring a web designer and they didn't know anything about traffic generation, search engine optimization or writing effective web content.
Don't get your relative or neighborhood college student to design your website. If you want to be professional and are serious, then you need a professional website that will get people to take action and will look professional. Nothing screams amateur more than a homemade website. The same is true for any of your other marketing materials.
3. Lack of marketing or sales mastery
The best marketer always gets the most new clients. Even if you have a superior product, if you don't know how to market it effectively and then close the sale, you will struggle. In today's information laden world, you need to know how to stand out and broadcast your message consistently and effectively. You've got to learn the proven marketing strategies and systems that are working for your top competitors and you need to master them. And you need to make marketing a daily activity, not just something you do when you have extra time.
4. Putting all your eggs in one basket
I've seen businesses sink because they depended on only one or two high profile, high paying clients. This is a mistake. Always make sure you're in a position that if you lose one client, your business can still survive and thrive.
The other way this can play out is if you offer only one or two primary products and once a client has finished using this product or service they move on. You're then relying on constantly getting new clients instead of making the most of the ones you have. That's why I teach people how to build a product funnel to keep clients coming back again and again.
5. Going it alone
Whether you're small or solo, you're the owner and you make the decisions. But you still need a support team. Work with a coach or mentor who can help you stay on track. Consider joining or creating a mastermind group of successful people who can be like a vision team for you and who will support you and push you outside your comfort zone.
The other way going it alone can sabotage you is if you want to control everything yourself and don't outsource. You need to be the person who sets strategy, creates products, and serves clients. The rest can be done by others and once you get this and follow through, your income will increase significantly.
6. Mis-allocated time
Spending time running from task to task with no idea of what's really a priority or an income-generating activity can run you ragged and cost you your business. Surfing the web, checking e-mail constantly, and other time thieves need to be avoided at all costs. Track how many hours each day are spent on client-generating activities or on servicing clients and how much time is spent otherwise. It's really eye-opening.
7. Lack of planning
I know you wouldn't take an overseas trip without detailed planning. So why would you run your business without one? When you have a vision and a plan you can check in regularly throughout the day and ask yourself, "Is what I'm doing supporting my plan and my goals?" Plan out at least 6 months ahead--what products you'll introduce, what marketing you'll do, how much money you intend to pull in.
The first step is to admit if you are making one of these mistakes. It's okay, we've all made them. Then start taking action right now to eliminate the mistake so you can experience the real success you deserve.

Grading Scale for Books and printed media

Grading Scale for Books and printed media

IOBA Book Terminology
IOBA Condition Description Definitions
For many years, the grading system defined by AB Bookman (now sadly defunct) was the standard in the antiquarian book trade. IOBA's standards, listed below, do not fundamentally differ from those standards though they have been expanded upon, and defined a bit more specifically.
(Condition normally shown as __/__, i.e., F/F, denoting first book & then dustjacket condition)
AS NEW (AN) or VERY FINE (VF) or MINT (M): Without faults or defects, unread, in the same immaculate condition in which it was published (Note: very few "new" books qualify for this grade, as many times there will be rubs/scuffs to the dustjackets from shipping, or bumped lower spine ends/corners from shelving).
FINE (F): Approaches the above, but not crisp. May have been carefully read and dustjacket may have been slightly rubbed or spine ends slightly bumped from shelving/shipping, but no real defects or faults.
(NOTE: From here on, there may be "+" and "-" in a grade, which will mean that it is above the grade noted but not quite to the next higher grade for "+", and that it is below the grade noted but not quite to the next lower grade for "-".
NEAR FINE: Also used, although not contained in Bookman's Weekly definitions, meaning a book or dustjacket approaching FINE but with a couple of very minor defects or faults.
VERY GOOD: A used book showing some small signs of wear on either binding or dustjacket. Any defects/faults must be noted.
GOOD: The average used and worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects must be noted.
FAIR: A worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title page, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, dustjacket, etc. may also be worn. All defects/faults must be noted.
POOR or READING COPY: A book that is sufficiently worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted, and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.
EX-LIBRARY: Must always be designated as such no matter what the condition of the book.
BOOK CLUB: Must always be noted as such no matter what the condition of the book.
BINDING COPY: A book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or non-existent.
Always, if issued with one, the lack of a dustjacket or slipcase should be noted.

Grading Records

Discogs uses the Goldmine Standard for listing the condition of items for sale.
Mint (M)
Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed. Should be used sparingly as a grade, If at all.
Near Mint (NM or M-)
A nearly perfect record. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhaps correctly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap. Near Mint is the highest price listed in all Goldmine price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in the opinion of both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highest Goldmine book value.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
Generally worth 50 percent of the Near Mint value. A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus record highly acceptable.
Very Good (VG)
Generally worth 25 percent of Near Mint value. Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them. Goldmine price guides with more than one price will list Very Good as the lowest price. This, not the Near Mint price, should be your guide when determining how much a record is worth, as that is the price a dealer will normally pay you for a Near Mint record.
Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
Generally worth 10-15 percent of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object. It is a common item, you'll probably find another copy in better shape eventually. Pass it up. But, if it's something you have been seeking for years, and the price is right, get it...but keep looking to upgrade.
Poor (P), Fair (F)
Generally worth 0-5 percent of the Near Mint price. The record is cracked, badly warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and writing. The LP cover barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully seam split, crinkled, and written upon. Except for impossibly rare records otherwise unattainable, records in this condition should be bought or sold for no more than a few cents each.

What does it cost to sell on eBay?

What does it cost to sell on eBay?

http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/questions/what-fees.html

The cost to sell on eBay varies depending on which eBay site you’re selling on, and how you list your item. When you sell an item, you’ll be able to review your fees on the listing form before you submit your listing. Your total cost will be a total of the Insertion Fee, Final Value Fee, and listing upgrade fees. Here’s how it works:
  • Insertion Fee: When you list an item, you’re charged an Insertion Fee for the listing. The Insertion Fee is based on the starting price and the category of your item. If you specified a reserve price, the Insertion Fee is based on the reserve price amount.
  • Final Value Fee: If the item sells, you’re charged a Final Value Fee. The Final Value Fee is based on the final sale price and category of the item. It does not include shipping costs.
  • Listing upgrades: If you add upgrades to your listing, such as a subtitle, extra picture, or highlighting, there will be an additional charge for each listing upgrade.

Bonanzle: The Best eBay Alternative We've Seen — eCommerce-Guide.com

Bonanzle: The Best eBay Alternative We've Seen — eCommerce-Guide.com

Bonanzle: The Best eBay Alternative We've Seen

By Vangie Beal

July 30, 2008

What do you get when you take the time-consuming, tedious listing process out of auction sites, toss in some cool features, such as on-the-fly image-cropping and live chat, mix it up with a price and description estimator and, really, more features than one should list in an opening sentence?

You get Bonanzle — an eBay alternative that is quite simply, the best I've seen in my four years of reviewing and writing about start-up marketplaces aimed at taking sellers away from eBay.

Addressing the Needs of Frustrated Sellers

One of the biggest problems that we find on many of the smaller alternative sites, and even on the big sites including eBay itself, is that in their attempt to be so feature-rich, they actually make listing items a chore for experienced sellers and for novices the task can be rather overwhelming.

As a seller, I know I am not alone in my frustration. From having to go through seven or more screens just to select an item category, to doing just as much work to create my own storefront category names (not to mention copying HTML templates from one Web site to another), listing online for the small, average seller is becoming more complex and awkward and you need to invest far too much time in the actual listing process.

During an interview with Ecommerce-Guide.com, the site's founder, Bill Harding, summed up the heart of Bonanzle.com's philosophy when he said, "Do we really need five or more screens to list a single item?"

Easy Listing with Bonanzle.

(Click for larger image.)

When I clicked the sell button on Bonanzle, this little paragraph-size window popped up, and within that single screen I saw fields for everything I needed to list an item. I knew there had to be more to it, and after taking a good look at the screen, I spotted an "advanced" link. Hitting that brought up a measly two additional lines.

I knew I was looking at an alternative that was very different from the rest of the sites out there.

What Does Bonanzle Have That Others Don't?

To sell an item, you simply click the sell button and fill out a basic single screen listing page; you will need to provide an item title, category, description, price and choose the shipping options from a drop-down menu. It is important to note several key features within the listing screen.

First, when choosing a category, you start typing and suggested categories will appear letting you quickly fill in that part. You can also search Amazon and Yahoo for a description of your item, right from the listing screen, and the system will also display the average selling prices for items matching your own item description. When listing your item, you can save a lot of time by copying the description or by selecting a price shown from Amazon or Yahoo to use for your own Bonanzle products.

Bountiful Ease of Use with Bonanzle Image Cropper.

(Click for larger image.)

From this single listing screen you also add your images. After uploading your product shots, you can use the built in image-cropper to zoom, crop and save images. The image-cropper also serves as yet another Bonanzle time-saver for sellers. Let's say you have 10 items to list. Rather than take 10 photos, upload and edit each one, then add them to your listings, you can simply lay out the items, take one shot, upload it to Bonanzle and use the cropper to show only the relevant part of the image in the listing you are working on. It's one of the easiest image-processing systems I've ever used.

Setting Up Shop and Chatting in Real Time

Bonanzle also has booths, which is their own version of an online store. In a way, it is like the storefronts you find on eBay and other alternatives; however it's a lot less work. You simply provide details on which site format you are most used to (eBay or Craigslist), post your items, set up your seller account and confirm your details. To add additional items later on, you only need to list them on Bonanzle to include them in your booth. No custom category editing required.

Get Cozy in a Bonanzle Booth.

(Click for larger image.)

Another unique aspect of Bonanzle is that it gives the buying and selling community ways to communicate in real-time from within the Web site. When I use Kijiji, for example, it's amazing how much time I have to spend in e-mail. Some prospective buyers want to know the item's history, others want to barter or discuss viewing and pick-up times. On Bonanzle, you can specify pick-up times, and buyers can also use the site's Quick Chat feature to ask sellers these questions in real time, while they are online.

Sellers can keep the chat as an archive for others to view or delete it. You can also opt to receive instant messages (IM) through AIM, Gmail, MSN or other Jabber networks. Bonanzle lets you receive messages from within your booth, and also send messages back from your IM client. It's surprising that no one has considered this style of Quick Chat or seamless IM integration before, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it start surfacing on other sites after seeing how well it works on Bonanzle.

Not a Here Today, Gone Tomorrow Effort

Of course it takes more than a quick listing screen, a built in picture cropper, instant messaging integration, Quick Chat and an online booth to be the kind of marketplace where sellers want to list. But the options and features I've mentioned so far are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

To be an alternative that people trust, you also have to show you're in it for the long haul. Sellers are growing weary of the one hit wonders, and want stability and a growing seller and buyer user-base. Part of what makes Bonanzle standout from the other eBay wannabes is that you can tell time, hard work, knowledge and dedication has gone into it. It's not an off-the-shelf package that someone has purchased, edited admin options and then put up on a Web server somewhere.

The Bonanzle platform was designed in-house from the ground up, so not only does the site look very different from other alternative sites, but this is the reason why the tools and features on this site are so radically different.

Harding calls Bonanzle 'the alternative to lookalike Craigslist and eBay alternatives.' I would agree, but the site and its services go well beyond that. The best way to experience Bonanzle is simply to log on and try it. What you will find is that Harding and his team of self-titled "action-minded experts" have managed to offer sellers more features in this one site than any alternative to date, yet keep the entire site and selling process simple, compact and super-easy to use.

Like other eBay alternatives, however, Bonanzle's hurdle is going to be drawing in the many online sellers and buyers that are combing the Web looking for a new marketplace to call home. Currently, the site does show active booths and sellers. On the topic of traffic, Harding said that since the site's "unofficial" beta launch, traffic has steadily increased.

The Cost of Doing Business on Bonanzle

Bonanzle offers free listings to sellers, and for now, while in its unofficial beta stage, you also won't pay any fees when you sell. Harding told Ecommerce-Guide.com that at a later date, final fees will be added to the Web site. Sellers can expect a sliding final sale fee system as follows: no charge for items that sell for under $10, items under $50 will incur a $1 fee, a $100 sale will have a $3 fee, and so on, up to a $10 fee for items selling over $1,000. Harding also said that listing on Bonanzle will always be free.

We'll be checking in on Bonanzle from time to time to see how well this new stellar site performs. Until then, we welcome your feedback and comments on this and any other eBay alternative site you may be using.
